A circa 1900 view of the north and west sides of the Old Custom House at Monterey, California, with the same staff upon which Commodore John D. Sloat, USN raised the American Flag on 7 July 1846, when he took possession of California. The two people shown are Capt. Thomas G. Lambert and his wife, who were caretakers and occupants of the house for over twenty years.
