Before war was officially declared (May 13, 1846) General Zachary Taylor fought the Mexican troops and repulsed the enemy's cavalry attack. Some 1,700 Americans faced 5,700 Mexicans, driving them across the Rio Grande. This success made "Old Rough and Ready" a popular hero.
