BATTLE OF
MONTEREY
Adolphe Jean-Baptiste
Bayot after Carl Nebel. Toned Lithograph. D. Appleton & Co., NY.
1851.
In the foreground is General
Taylor with the column of attack marching down to the eastern edge of the city. Smoke from the Black Fort and the town itself show the Americans
were under fire from the beginning. To the right of the Black Fort are Independence Hill,
on top of which is the Bishop's Palace, where smoke indicates the position of Mexican artillery. Federation Hill lies beyond. The Sierre Madre Mountains lie in the background, left.
